Girl Scout Horse Program Information

Our council’s horses travel to new locations each month throughout the fall, winter and spring before moving up to Camp Menzies in the summer.  We have both riding and non-riding horse programs.  Check out our available programs and choose the one thats for you:

Horse Tails

Age Level: Girls in 2nd grade and older
Fee: $35 per girl
Get to know the council horses at this special event.  You will learn about horse safety, grooming and receive a one-hour horseback riding arena lesson.  Fee includes horseback riding instruction and a participation patch.  This program is open to troops as well as individual Girl Scouts.  (Formally Horse Tails and/or Passport to Ride, Level 1, Lesson 1)

Horse Tails 2

Age Level: 3rd and 4th grade girls
Fee: $35 per girl
Learn even more about horses at this riding event.  Practice your knots, learn more about grooming and saddling your horse and try a horse challenge game.  Fee includes horseback riding instruction and a participation patch.  This program is open to troops as well as individual Girl Scouts.  Please Note: Girls should have attended Horse Tails prior to this event; we ask that troops not attend Horse Tails and Horse Tails 2 in the same weekend.

Trailblazers

Age Level: Girls in 4th grade and older
Fee: $70 per girl; $40 per adult
This is an overnight camping program for Girl Scout troops.  Each troop will get to enjoy a trail ride, horseback riding and roping demonstrations, as well as some traditional camp activities.  Each troop will need their own level 1 First Aider.  Groups are limited to the ratios found on page 59 of Volunteer Essentials.  Girls can register with a troop, or as an individual for this event.  Individuals need to have an adult attending with them.  Fee includes horseback riding instruction for girls (and adults as available), program materials, a participation patch and food.

Passport to Ride

Our Passport to Ride program is a progressive series of lessons.  Girls sign up for a full day program which includes a 2-hour session in the morning and a 2-hour session in the afternoon following an extended lunch break.  Each lesson includes one hour of horseback riding instruction and a one hour ground session.  Please note: Girls must register individually for these programs; troop registrations will not be accepted. Adults are welcome to watch but are not required to stay for these programs.

Level 1, Lessons 1 and 2
(Formally Level 1, Lessons 2 and 3)

Fee: $70.00 per girl
Age Level: Girls in 4th grade and older
Work on timing, rhythm and balance and you move through diagonal patterns.  Learn how to feel where your horse’s feet are and try a balance game.  Ground lessons will focus on saddling and bridling.  These sessions include two one-hour horseback riding sessions (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) as well as two one-hour ground sessions.  There will be a 1 ½ hour lunch break between lessons to give the horses and horse staff time to rest.  Pre-requisite: Girls must have completed a Horse Tails session or horse program at Camp Menzies.  Please note: Girls must register individually for this program; troop registrations will not be accepted.

Passport to Ride, Level 1, Lessons 3 and 4

Fee: $70.00 per girl
Age Level: Girls in 5th grade and older
Warm up the morning by working on leg aides and full circles, pick up the speed and try a little jogging with your horse in the afternoon.  Ground lessons will focus on parts of the horse, horse breeds, coloration and how to safely catch and lead your horse.  These sessions include two one-hour horseback riding sessions (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) as well as two one-hour ground sessions.  There will be a 1 ½ hour lunch break between lessons to give the horses and horse staff time to rest.  Pre-requisite: Girls must have completed Passport to Ride, Level 1, Lessons 1 and 2.  Please note: Girls must register individually for this program; troop registrations will not be accepted.

 

Passport to Ride, Level 2, Lessons 1 and 2

Fee: $70.00 per girl
Age Level: Girls in 5th grade and older
Continue to work on controlling your body as you practice leg aides, foot control and jogging.  Ground lessons will focus on horse feed and nutrition and horse first aid and preventative care.  These sessions include two one-hour horseback riding sessions (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) as well as two one-hour ground sessions.  There will be a 1 ½ hour lunch break between lessons to give the horses and horse staff time to rest.  Pre-requisite: Girls must have completed Passport to Ride, Level 1, Lessons 3 and 4.  Please note: Girls must register individually for this program; troop registrations will not be accepted.

 

Passport to Ride, Level 2, Lessons 3 and 4

Fee: $70.00 per girl
Age Level: Girls in 6th grade and older
Learn what to do in case of emergency, work on your emergency dismount and try bareback riding during the afternoon session.  Ground lessons will focus on hoof and mouth care.  These sessions include two one-hour horseback riding sessions (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) as well as two one-hour ground sessions.  There will be a 1 ½ hour lunch break between lessons to give the horses and horse staff time to rest.  Pre-requisite: Girls must have completed Passport to Ride, Level 2, Lessons 1 and 2.  Please note: Girls must register individually for this program; troop registrations will not be accepted.
