Girl Voice Committee

The Girl Voice Committee is a group of twenty-one Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts (grades 9–12) who serve as a champion for girls within the Girl Scouts Heart of Central California's council jurisdiction. The GVC will provide leadership for all girls by implementing activities, drafting and advising on council policy, and instating effective change for the betterment of GSHCC members and our larger community. 

Applications will be accepted from any Girl Scout in grades 9-12, who are current, registered members of Girl Scouts Heart of Central California. Applications from 8th graders will be accepted and reviewed on a case by case basis.

About the Girl Voice Committee

What you will do

As a member of the Girl Voice Committee, you and your peers will be tasked annually to:

  • Collaborate Girl Scouts Heart of Central California leadership and staff to propose innovative programming the council.
  • Advise Girl Scout Heart of Central California Leadership and Staff 
  • Gain leadership and professional development skills.
  • Plan relevant girl events that increase girl engagement.
  • Attend Girl Scout Voice Committee meetings and Girl Scout Voice Committee events.
  • Demonstrate Girl Scout pride through community involvement, and
  • Serve as a voice, leader, and advocate for the 18,000 girls in the Girl Scouts Heart of Central California council.
Meetings, term length and commitment

Meetings
The Girl Scout Voice Committee meets virtually once a month throughout the year (with a break in the summer), including one mandatory overnight retreat. (The overnight retreat is currently postponed due to COVID-19). Monthly meetings are held in the evenings, after school, and typically last for two hours.

You are expected to make every effort to attend and actively participate at every meeting. We are currently only meeting virtually. The transition to in-person meetings is on hold.

Term
Each Girl Scout can serve two 1-year terms on the board up to September 30th of their graduation year from High School. Once appointed, you are expected to commit to one year on the board. 

 

 

Qualifications and selection criteria

Any Girl Scout Senior (grades 9–10) or Girl Scout Ambassador (grades 11–12) who is a registered member of Girl Scouts Heart of Central California is encouraged to apply.

A strong candidate:

  • Lives by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. 
  • Has strong leadership qualities and/or has held leadership positions within her community. 
  • Can provide evidence of Girl Scout participation.
  • Can provide evidence of volunteering within and outside of the Girl Scouts.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of strong written and/or verbal communication skills
Application process

To apply, simply complete the application by September 30, 2020. All applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by the Girl Voice Committee Mentors and GSHCC Staff. All applicants will go through an interview process and be notified via email or phone of the application status in the second week of October.

 

Girl Voice Committee Positions

President

President Purpose: The Girl Voice Committee President will serve in the highest capacity of a leadership role to the GVC. The GVC President serves as a role model and representative for all GSHCC Girl Scout members. The President serves as the lead facilitator for all GVC meetings and works closely with the Vice President to ensure proper procedures are followed for all agendas and schedules. The President is one of GVC representatives to the GSHCC Executive Leadership Council Staff. Most importantly, the GVC President provides an inclusive, collaborative and positive environment for the entire GVC. 

Term: 1 Year 

Responsibilities:

  • Attend Up to 2 GVC meetings a month and potentially 1 additional GVC event a quarter 
  • Preside over all GVC meetings monthly and Lead subcommittee meetings monthly.
  • Create GVC Meeting Agenda, collaborate with Chair members on meeting needs and submit to GVC Mentors prior to meeting 
  • Act as a facilitator for GVC Meetings 
  • Know the basics of meeting procedures to ensure smooth meetings
  • Serve as GVC Representative of GSHCC Executive Leadership Council Staff
  • Maintain frequent contact with Girl Voice Committee Mentors (Alicia, Katherine)
  • Participate in GVC Events 
  • Create structure and vision for the future of GVC 
  • Delegate responsibility to the GVC  in order to best spread out tasks and assignments.
  • Collaborate with GSHCC Staff in an advisory capacity as the “girl representative” for upcoming GSHCC planned events

Vice President

Purpose: The Girl Voice Committee Vice President will serve as an assistant leadership role to the entire GVC. The Vice President will work closely with the President for all committee meeting agendas and scheduling. The Vice President is one of GVC representatives to the GSHCC Executive Leadership Council Staff. Most importantly, the GVC Vice President provides an inclusive, collaborative and positive environment for the entire GVC. 

Term: 1 Year  

Responsibilities:

  • Attend Up to 2 GVC meetings a month and potentially 1 additional GVC event a quarter.
  • Serve in the President's role when the President is unable to attend meetings or fulfill President's responsibilities. 
  • Know the basics of meeting procedures to ensure smooth meetings
  • Create a collaborative environment with the President in order to brainstorm new ideas/provide support for the entire GVC.
  • Participate in GVC events. 
  • Collaborate with Events and Recognitions Chairs to create a post-event elevations process of GVC planned events. 
  • Support the President in the delegation of tasks, step up to take the lead on projects, and help complete the work of the GVC.
  • Collaborate with GSHCC Staff  in an advisory capacity as the girl representative for upcoming GSHCC planned events.

Secretary

Purpose: The Girl Voice Committee Secretary Chair will serve in the capacity of record and documentation keeper for GVC meetings. The Secretary Chair maintains a database of meeting agendas, communications and requests pertaining to the GVC. 

Term: 1 Year 

Responsibilities:

  • Attend Up to 2 GVC meetings a month and potentially 1 additional GVC event a quarter.
  • Responsible for keep minutes (notes of meeting discussion and decisions) during GVC Meetings.
  • Keep an organized folder of all past agendas and minutes.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Chairs. President and Vice President to coordinate correspondence for external and internal parties.
  • Participate in GVC events.
  • Remain dependable and trustworthy by action and word.
  • Create an environment of giving/receiving feedback in a positive and constructive way.

Treasurer

Purpose: The Girl Voice Committee Treasurer Chair serves in the capacity of financial record keeping: such as events budget, committee spending, donation tracking, database tracking, financial approvals, and other financial aspects for the committee. Treasure Chair will collaborate regularly with Girl Voice Committee Mentors on the GVC financial records keeping and tracking. 

Term: 1 Year 

Responsibilities:

  • Along with the President, Vice President,  and Mentors help design the projected budget for the calendar year, including donations needed, money allocated, grant money received, etc.
  • Organize and file all documentation in specific treasurers folders.
  • Evaluate the efficiency of money spent, allocated, saved, by the GVC. 
  • Participate in GVC events.
  • Remain dependable and trustworthy by action and word.
  • Create an environment of giving/receiving feedback in a positive and constructive way.

Recognitions Chair

Purpose: The Girl Voice Committee Recognition Chairs provide an essential role in recognizing and celebrating the accomplishments of the Girl Voice Committee. The Recognition Chairs create all formal acknowledgements and rewards for GVC committee members. The Recognition Chairs will plan an annual appreciation event for Girl Scouts helping at council level events.  

Term: 1 year 

Responsibilities:

  • Attend Up to 2 GVC meetings a month and potentially 1 additional GVC event a month.
  • Create unique recognition kudos for all  GVC meetings.
  • Plan and implement an annual appreciation event for Girl Scouts helping at council level events.  
  • Work collaboratively with Events and Communication chairs in GVC event planning process.
  • Collaborate with the GVC Committee to ensure all appropriate individuals/organizations are formally recognized by GVC. 
  • Collaborate with Events and Vice President to create a post-event evaluation process for GVC planned events. 
  • Participate in GVC events.
  • Remain dependable and trustworthy by action and word.
  • Create an environment of giving/receiving feedback in a positive and constructive way.

Events Chair

Purpose: The Girl Voice Committee Events Chairs will serve as the committee's “specialist” on the capacity of GSHCC protocol for event planning, safety, and risk management. The Event Chairs will at times be the lead on planning GVC events or serve in an advisory capacity to Event Leads for  GVC planned events on GSHCC protocol for event planning, safety and Risk Management. 

Term: 1 Year

Responsibilities:

  • Attend Up to 2 GVC meetings a month and potential 1 additional GVC event a quarter.
  • Have completed or be willing to complete girl education training; event planning and risk management.  
  • Ensure GVC planned events are adhering to GSHCC event planning, safety and risk management protocol.
  • Utilize evaluation system to best judge GVC events.
  • Collaborate with GSHCC Staff  in an advisory capacity as the “girl representative” for upcoming GSHCC planned events 
  • Keep a record of GVC planned events.
  • Collaborate closely with the Recognitions, Communications, Treasure and Recruitment Chairs in the event planning process. 
  • Remain dependable and trustworthy by action and word.
  • Create an environment of giving/receiving feedback in a positive and constructive way.

Recruitment Chair

Purpose: The Girl Voice Committee Recruitment Chairs will serve as in the capacity of assisting or advising on recruitment needs to GVC or GSHCC events. The Recruitment Chairs may collaborate in an advisory capacity to the GSHCC Membership Recruitment Department for girl targeted recruitment strategies. 

Term: 1 year

Responsibilities:

  • Attend Up to 2 GVC meetings a month and potentially 1 additional GVC event a quarter.
  • Assist in the recruitment of girls and volunteers to support GVC and GSHCC planned events.
  • Collaborate with GSHCC Staff  in an advisory capacity as the girl voice representative on potential recruitment strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with the Recognitions, Communications, Treasurer and Event Chairs for varying GVC and GSHCC needs. 
  • Assist in creating innovative ways to recruit “new girls” to the Girl Voice Committee.
  • Remain dependable and trustworthy by action and word.
  • Create an environment of giving/receiving feedback in a positive and constructive way.

Communications Chair

Purpose: The Girl Voice Committee Communications Chairs will serve in a collaborative capacity in advising, creating, and implementing internal/external communications via social media, online content, email and phone in various ways for GVC and GSHCC needs. This position serves in the essential role of representing the Girl Voice Committee to external members and communities. 

Term: 1 year

Responsibilities:

  • Attend Up to 2 GVC meetings a month and potentially 1 additional GVC event a month.
  • Collaborate  to create innovative ideas for social media and online content for girl members.  
  • Review GVC communications prior to submission to GVC Mentors.
  • Collaborate with GSHCC Marketing and Communications Department in a Lead or advisory capacity for external Marketing and Communications as the girl voice representative. 
  • Remain dependable and trustworthy by action and word.
  • Create an environment of giving/receiving feedback in a positive and constructive way.

General Member

Purpose: Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts can apply to be a General Member of the Girl Voice Committee. A General Member will help provide guidance, help and support for GVC events. General Members will assist as needed on any special projects for the GVC and potentially Girl Scout Heart of Central California Staff members. 

Term: 1 year

Responsibilities:

  • Attended monthly GVC General Membership meetings 
  • Assist and/or attend GVC planned events
  • Assist on special projects for the GVC or GSHCC Staff
  • Remain dependable and trustworthy by action and word.
  • Create an environment of giving/receiving feedback in a positive and constructive way.
